I need Mom advice

I am having a real tough time feeding Sam these past few days. Every time I nurse him, he seems to spit up everything he's just eaten. If I pump and then put it in a bottle (this amazing "slow-flow" bottle I found at Target), he rarely spits up. The solution is that I should just pump and put it in the bottle, right? The problem with that is, when Sam wakes up and is hungry, it is so much faster to nurse him rather than to make him wait another 15-20 minutes while I pump. And I can't just pump before he's hungry because my milk isn't produced yet. The little guy is sucking me dry. And I don't seem to be producing as much as I was last week or even a few days ago. That's my pickle. Any knowledge or advice?

Here are more amazing pictures from Selena Reid, photographer extraordinairre.

I had some of the same problems with Jolie. 1. make sure you are drinking 10-12 glasses of water a day and you will produce more milk. Jolie did better with a slow flow nipple than nursing, so it sounds weird but if your rocking chair reclines (or just lay down) have him nurse pretty much in the laying down position, his face down. I am telling you it sounds weird but that worked for Jolie, the milk comes out slower because it is going agaist gravity, and she didn't spit up as much. and remember to drink drink drink! I hope that helps! He is such a cutie patootie!

sounds like he is eating too fast. That must be why he rarely throws up with the "slow flow" bottle. I would try giving him breaks when nursing here and there...to let it go down....so he is not taking it all in too fast. He is a hungry lil guy ! Plus I doubt you want to resort to the bottle this soon anyway, I know I wish I did not have to . Anyway hope that helps.

Oh my gosh I LOVE ...LOVE he pic on top of his dresser with the vintage clock and lamp...amazing....love the stripes on the walls! Is that his room? Whatever room it is...its beautiful!

What would we do without Selena?

Here's what you do: pump while he's napping, store the milk in the slow-flow bottle for when he wakes up. Another option is to pump whenever you want, and freeze the milk. When he wakes up, thaw the milk, stick it in his favorite bottle and, viola! Satisfied baby.

Good luck.

I think we met once before but I'm Devin's cousin. Hi!!!! So now that you know me I can give some advice:) My sister inlaw always has spitty babies and this is what worked for her. Once you have "let down" while nursing stop until that feeling goes away. The milk seems to be gushing out during this time. Let down is when you have the pins and needles feeling and your milk begins to flow. Plus pumping that much will become a hassle for sure. You may not be producing as much because of the pumping. Your baby is more efficient at emptying you:) and your body doesn't make as much if it thinks it doesn't need it. I hope this helps. You will get so much advice in this area everyone thinks what they did is best, take all this advise and do what works best for you and your family.

So cute! His room looks amazing Allison! Good job.

I didn't read anyone else's response, so sorry if I repeat. The reason he might be spitting up a lot (just like MJ did) is because you probably have a really fast/powerful let-down. He will eventually get used to this and become a pro. It looks like he's spitting up everything he just ate, but spill a tablespoon of milk on the counter and see how much it looks like- alot! So don't worry, I'm sure he's eating enough. The trick to keep your milk supply up is to nurse nurse nurse... your body will produce exactly what he needs. It's amazing how God created us. If you do have a problem- make sure you're drinking enough and eating enough calories. You also can take a supplement called "Fenu Greek". It can help boost your milk supply. Also, try to keep him upright for a while after you nurse him, if you aren't already. I would highly recommend calling a la leche league leader to help you. They got me through so much- just on over the phone!

Good luck! You're an awesome mom. And I totally know what you mean about pumping- then bottle feeding. What a pain!

very good advice from everyone! Ashlyn spit up alot too and I would have to burp her alot...sometimes after a couple minutes of her feeding because she would gulp alot of air. Also, if he's going too long between feedings, he will be so hungry and gulping air alot more so you could try feeding him more often which in turn will produce more milk. Your body is regulating itself now so you won't be so engorged all the time plus your breasts will start feeling softer which will make you think that there's not enough milk but they are supposed to be like that.

he could have acid reflux..a lot of babies have them. nothing to worry about. The slow flow thing rocks! a friend of mine uses it - she had the same problem

he'll adjust!

Oh man he's so cute! Man you have gotten a lot of advise. Go with the advice that he's still getting a lot of milk, even with the spitting up. It will slow down. Don't pump too much it makes it too hard and he'll get used to it! He's soooo stinking cute, you little photographer!
